How to Turn a Photo Into a String Art Portrait
Upload your favorite photo and get the exact nail-by-nail pattern to recreate it as a portrait made of nails and a single thread. You receive a printable PDF with the full nail sequence, a 1:1 nail template and a shopping list — the preview and the basic guide are completely free.
What Is a Thread Portrait?
A string art portrait — also called a thread portrait or nail portrait — is a picture of a face or figure created by winding one continuous thread between nails placed around a board. Where the thread crosses more densely, the surface looks darker; where it crosses rarely, it stays light. Viewed from a few steps back, this varying density forms the light-and-shadow contrast of a recognizable portrait. String Art Studio computes that thread path for you from any photo, so you only have to hammer the nails and follow the numbered sequence.
From Photo to Portrait in 4 Steps
- 1Upload your photoPick a clear, high-contrast portrait and upload it. You instantly see a live preview of the string art result — before paying anything.
- 2Choose shape, size and detailRound, square or rectangular; the diameter in centimeters; and the nail count (200, 300 or 500). More nails give finer facial detail.
- 3Generate the patternThe algorithm calculates the exact order a single thread is wound around the nails. You get a printable PDF: nail sequence, 1:1 nail template and shopping list.
- 4Build your portraitHammer the nails through the printed template so they sit exactly right, then follow the numbered steps, winding the thread from nail to nail until the portrait appears.

Which Photos Work Best
- Front-facing portraits with even, soft lighting
- A clear, simple or plain background (less visual noise = sharper result)
- Strong contrast between the face and the background
- Pets and silhouettes also work very well
Harder cases: very dark or very bright photos without midtones, tiny details, and cluttered backgrounds. Because the preview is free, you can test any photo risk-free.
How Many Nails & Thread?
For a recognizable face, aim for at least 250–300 nails — Basic covers up to 200, Standard up to 300, Premium up to 500. A 40–50 cm portrait typically needs 80–150 meters of thread at 200 nails, more at higher counts. The configurator shows the exact thread length and line count for your chosen settings before you build.
